If you live in North County San Diego, you already know that summer doesn't really disappear when the calendar says September.

The ocean is still warm, the evenings are still beautiful, and the beaches can actually feel a little more relaxed once the peak summer crowds begin to thin out. September is what many locals consider “locals' summer”—a time when you can enjoy the coast, outdoor dining, trails, and neighborhood events without quite as much of the summer rush.

From Del Mar and Solana Beach to Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside, there is plenty happening this month.

So if you're wondering what to do before summer officially gives way to fall, here are 15 ways to enjoy September in North County San Diego.

1. Start With a Beach Morning in Del Mar

There's something timeless about a morning at the beach.

Head to Del Mar early, grab a coffee, walk along the sand, and watch the surfers before the day gets busy.

For a post-beach meal with an ocean view, consider Poseidon on the Beach, located right along Coast Boulevard. The restaurant describes itself as oceanfront coastal dining, making it an easy choice when you want to turn a beach morning into a long lunch or sunset dinner.

Local idea: Go early, walk the beach, then stay for lunch. No complicated itinerary necessary.

2. Have a Sunset Dinner by the Pacific

September evenings are made for outdoor dining.

For a classic Del Mar experience, Jake's Del Mar sits directly across from the ocean and serves coastal fare just steps from the waves.

Another option is Pacifica Del Mar, where the coastal setting makes it a natural choice for a sunset dinner.

The best part? You don't need to make the evening complicated. Dinner, an ocean view, and a walk afterward can be the entire plan.

3. Take a Walk Through Encinitas

September is a great time to explore Encinitas without rushing.

Start along Coast Highway 101, browse the local shops, grab coffee, and eventually make your way toward the water.

Then head down to Moonlight State Beach for a walk along the coast.

If you're hungry afterward, Encinitas Fish Shop is a fun casual option for seafood.

The perfect Encinitas afternoon: coffee → shops → beach → seafood.

4. Catch a Free Wednesday Concert in Encinitas

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the local arts scene this month is to check out Wednesdays@Noon, presented by the City of Encinitas.

September's 2026 lineup includes performances on September 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, with artists ranging from Julia Barnett & Kathleen Long to Darius Degher and Liquid Bricks.

It's a great reminder that some of the best local experiences don't require a big budget.

5. Spend an Afternoon at Fletcher Cove

For a smaller coastal park experience, head to Fletcher Cove Beach Park in Solana Beach.

It's a beautiful place to take a walk, enjoy the ocean views, or simply sit and watch the waves.

If you're exploring North County with someone visiting from out of town, this is the kind of stop that gives them a quick taste of the area's coastal lifestyle.

6. Explore San Elijo State Beach

If you're looking for a quintessential North County beach experience, don't overlook San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff.

It's especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the light begins to soften.

Bring a towel, a good book, and plenty of sunscreen—or simply walk along the shoreline and enjoy the scenery.

7. Pack a Picnic for Powerhouse Park

Powerhouse Park in Del Mar is one of those places where you can make an afternoon out of almost nothing.

Pick up sandwiches and something cold to drink, bring a blanket, and find a spot to enjoy the view.

It's also a great place to bring visiting family because you can combine the park with a walk along the coast and dinner nearby.

8. Explore Carlsbad Village

Spend an afternoon in Carlsbad without setting a schedule.

Walk around the Village, browse local stores, stop for coffee, and eventually make your way toward the beach.

When you're ready for dinner, Dini's By The Sea is a classic Carlsbad option, while Vigilucci's Seafood & Steakhouse offers a more upscale coastal dining experience.

The best part about Carlsbad Village is that you can easily spend a few hours there without feeling like you need to “do” anything.

9. Make September a Restaurant Month

September is also a great month to explore North County's food scene.

One timely event is San Diego Restaurant Week, which runs September 13–20, 2026. Visit Carlsbad lists participating experiences in the area, including Restaurant Week dining at Ponto Lago.

Instead of going to your usual restaurant, pick somewhere you've never tried.

Sometimes the best local discoveries happen when you order something completely different from your normal routine.

10. Take a Morning Walk Before the Heat Arrives

September mornings are perfect for getting outside.

Pick a trail, bring water, and get moving before the afternoon warms up.

You don't need to turn it into a serious hike. A relaxed walk through a local park or coastal trail can be just as enjoyable.

And there's an important North County rule:

A good morning walk should probably end with brunch.

11. Head to Carlsbad for the Beginning of Fall

Here's where September gets interesting.

Although we're still technically enjoying summer, Carlsbad's fall season is already beginning.

Visit Carlsbad's 2026 fall calendar includes Pumpkin Palooza, the Carlsbad Strawberry Company Pumpkin Patch, and Fantasy Fright, with several beginning in September and continuing into October.

It's the perfect time to get a little preview of fall without giving up beach season.

12. Bring the Kids to Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND

For families, one of the biggest September events in North County is Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND California.

The 2026 event begins September 19 and continues on select dates through November 1.

Expect trick-or-treating, LEGO characters, costume contests, live entertainment, Halloween decorations, and family-friendly seasonal attractions.

There's also a new Brick-or-Treat Street, featuring interactive LEGO monster homes and a Halloween light trail.

13. Visit the Carlsbad Coast at Golden Hour

After exploring Carlsbad, head toward the water around golden hour.

Carlsbad State Beach is a beautiful place to watch the sun begin to drop toward the horizon.

For dinner afterward, you can stay along the coast and try one of the area's seafood or ocean-view restaurants.

September is particularly nice for this because the days are still long enough to enjoy the beach before dinner.

14. Explore Encinitas' Local Art Scene

There's more to Encinitas than beaches and surfboards.

The City of Encinitas has a rotating collection of public art exhibitions, with exhibitions running from September 2026 into January 2027. Current and upcoming exhibits include Connecting the Land & Sea Through Floral & Fungi, North County Shore & Studio, and several other local artists.

It's an easy way to spend an hour or two if you want something different from the usual beach day.

15. Have One Last Classic Summer Beach Day

And finally, don't overthink it.

Before September disappears, have one more classic summer beach day.

Pick your favorite stretch of North County coastline. Bring the beach chairs. Pack snacks. Put your phone away for a while.

Swim.

Read.

Walk.

Watch the surfers.

Stay for sunset.

Because that's one of the best things about North County San Diego: summer doesn't really feel like it's over just because the calendar says September.
